Assessments as at Home Skill Reinforcement
Hello, Families!
Periodically, you will receive your children’s Fundations and math assessments. The expectation is that most kids will answer most items correctly. Early in the year, they are skills that were taught in kindergarten and later they will have been taught and practiced in our classroom. These assessments provide all kinds of information that goes way beyond number of correct items. Here are some suggestions for how best to use them as tools to gain insight into your child’s style and to support skill reinforcement, at home. Please remember that although we do not send paper homework packets home, we do expect that skills are being practiced regularly.
Let me know if you have questions, comments, or concerns!

- Notice and discuss how s/he did following the directions. This is an area that tends to be difficult. It is a chance to encourage self-advocacy. If s/he tells you s/he was unsure of what to do, encourage raising a quiet hand to ask.
- How is her/his letter and number formation? Is s/he using the Fundations lines properly, starting at the top, rather than from the bottom, noticing, and/or correcting reversals?
- How neat is her/his work? It does not need to be perfect, but if I cannot read it, I cannot mark it correctly. Printing practice, particularly through dictation, is something from which all kids can benefit!
- Note what content is correct as well as what isn’t and use this for at home practice.
